About goat milk lotion

What’s the difference between lotion and body butter?

Because our lotions are so much creamier than store bought, we’re often asked why we don’t call them body butters. In the world of cosmetics, there are little nuances between product types. Body butters are much thicker and creamier than lotions and are based in all the good “butters” out there like shea butter, cocoa butter, etc. Body butters contain no water. Our lotions are made with distilled water and as such, are correctly described as lotions. It doesn’t mean they are any less luxurious and they give you all the feel of a true body butter while hydrating your skin without the greasy feeling.

What makes goat milk lotion different?

Human skin pH is, on average, 4.7. As you add products to your skin, you can alter that pH resulting in a variety of feelings. Many cosmetics lean to the acidic side due to ingredients combinations that work well in an industrial setting but leave that dry, tight feeling on your skin. These ingredients and the acidity of the product can act as an irritant and disrupt the delicate microbiome of your skin. Goat milk itself is close to human skin PH which helps the lotion stay in balance with your natural microbiome and readily absorb into your skin. Goat milk contains alpha hydroxy acids which act as a natural exfoliant and help remove dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. Vitamin A and Vitamin B12 are naturally occurring in goat’s milk and are crucial in repairing damaged skin, regulating skin pigment, and reducing UV damage. As an added bonus, we don’t skim the cream in our goat’s milk so the cream’s fat molecules give you that butter soft feeling.

Why do you use preservative?

There’s a lot of science behind lotion. Our formula is an emulsion, meaning it’s a mixture of water, milk, and oils held together with an emulsifier. This is what keeps the lotion creamy rather than having the water and oils separate out from each other. We perform testing to ensure shelf stability of our lotions to make sure they don’t separate over time. If you read above, lotion contains water. All the microbes that exist on Earth thrive in water. Mold, yeast, and bacteria need water and are attracted to grow in any formulation that includes it. We follow strict sanitation protocols when making each batch of lotion to ensure a clean environment but, by nature, the water contained in lotion, left unchecked, will attract and grow new microbes. Adding preservative during the cooling phase of our lotion making process helps ensure the lotion stays free of unwanted microbial growth. It is a necessity to keep the lotions clean and safe. We’ve researched and tried a number of preservatives and have chosen a blend that has been certified by EcoCert. This ensures the preservative has undergone extensive testing to ensure it acts effectively against all three microbe types but is safe and does not include ingredients that bioaccumulate in the human body. Our chosen preservative is also certified cruelty free. We only use ingredients we feel safe using for our own family.
