How It Started

Our journey into farming began when we purchased our 1880’s home in Owego, NY in 2018. After spending years searching properties online, daydreaming of having a small farm, we began working with a realtor to find the right property. Every time we toured a home, it was raining and we figured it was just our signature for our endless search. After deciding to take a break, our realtor reached out with a property on a whim. We decided to head out but were skeptical after the drive up a dirt country road. We walked all around the house, through the soggy property and stood outside the barn in the rain in silence, knowing this is where we’d make our home. Shortly after, we welcome our daughter into the world and for the next four years spent our time slowly rehabbing the house and the land to make it suitable for livestock. With the help of my brother we purchased chicks from a humane hatchery and started our homesteading journey in 2020 during the midst of the pandemic. Three years later we’re now home to menagerie of animals and have started the foundation of our herd of Nubian goats.

What’s In A Name?

We named our farm in honor of my Babi, who passed in May 2021. She was raised on a very rural farm in then Czechoslovakia before meeting my grandpa during World War II. She became a war bride and left her family farm behind and came to the U.S. to start a family of her own. Growing up, she shared stories of walking the geese out to the fields, sisters birthing babies in the home kitchen, and how her father refused to eat any of the animals he raised (much to her mother’s dismay!). In honor of her unyielding spirit and our heritage, we named our farm Dobry Den, which means “good day” in Czech.

Our Logo

We hired another farmer to design our logo for us. It includes native northeast flowers, many of which will be incorporated into our products based on their medicinal properties. The horse in our logo is Finnegan who is the inspiration for jumping all in to unexpected adventures. I purchased Finn from the slaughter pipeline in 2012 after only seeing his photo online. We drove to a small auction house in NJ, loaded him up and began the long journey of training. He went from a little runaway Amish plow horse who was scared of his own shadow to the goofiest boy in the barn, giving smiles on command for treats, and toting around the barn kids to learn how to run barrels. The goat in our logo is our lovely Lark, the foundation of our herd. She has the temperament of a saint is the goat who taught us all there is to know about running a dairy and milking a doe. The chicken is a Holland chicken, which is a critically endangered breed listed on the Livestock Conservancy. Holland chickens are one of the oldest U.S. dual purpose breeds raised for backyard flocks. They faded out of fashion in favor of similar looking breeds like the Plymouth Barred Rock but are a heritage breed we are dedicated to preserving. They are predator-wise, great foragers, and have an even temperament suited to a backyard flock. We are working on building a breeding flock of Hollands to offer hatching eggs and chicks for sale in the future.

What We Do

We are dedicated to being stewards of this land and of our animals. We want to produce the highest quality skincare products that our customers can trust. We use all of our lotions and soaps at home within our own family before putting them out to market and make sure all of our ingredients are responsibly sourced.

All of our lotions and soaps are hand made in small batches to ensure quality and consistency. We aim to keep our process sustainable and as local as possible. Our goal is to stay within the carrying capacity of our goats, of our markets, and of our own labor.

LANDBACK Campaign

We recognize the many previous owners of our property. This house and this land has a long history of sustaining many families before us. But not included in the long list of names on the deed is the name of the Indigenous Tribes whose land was taken from them. As part of our commitment to recognizing and paying reparations, we give a percentage of our profits to the LANDBACK campaign each year.

Hand milked with care

Each of our does is hand milked daily and receive a healthy dose of love and snuggles while on the milk stand. We adhere to strict dairy handling practices including sanitizing, filtration, and quick chilling. All the milk used in our products is inspected for quality and each batch of lotion is microbial and pH tested.
